Laura Falzon and pianist Aysegul Durakoglu recorded Münir Nurettin Beken’s Pottery Shards for flute and piano.

Composer and ud performer Münir Nurettin Beken teaches composition at UCLA. His career spans composition, ethnomusicology, and performance. Pottery Shards, for flute and piano is based on Beken’s own work with the same name for orchestra. Beken’s music fuses elements of Turkish music with those of Western music. Lyrical in nature, Pottery Shards’s is written in the quintuplet meter called türk aksa and uses rhythmic elements based upon Turkish music patterns.

This work recorded by Laura Falzon and pianist Aysegul Durakoglu is featured in a CD compliation of works by Beken to be released in 2012.
